Musique du Pont Volant (Music of the Flying Bridge) 20:14

6 channel sound installation City Sonics Festival, Mons BE

LISTEN TO EXCERPT

The composition pays homage to the bridge as cathedral and musical instrument. At times the concrete dominates with traffic and metallic clangs singing in a dark cacophony, while the sounds of construction dissolve into an abstract soundscape as the bridge transcends the bounds of earthly function, bell tones sounding in homage to the bridge of imagination. The composition uses only the sound of bridges, selected for their aural texture and sound qualities from recordings in Bangkok, Brisbane, London, New York, Rotterdam, Singapore and Sydney. CoProduction: Transcultures and Jodi Rose

Imaginary Sketches for a ‘Global Bridge Symphony

(Visual Scores for Musical Interpretation)

Ever Falling Down (Tacoma Narrows Bridge, Washington State USA)

Instrumentation for Wind, Strings, Voice, Percussion and Electronics

The Tacoma Narrows bridge across Puget Sound (known as ‘Galloping Gertie’) is the most spectacular bridge failure in engineering history. The bridge collapsed 4 months after opening in 1940, as the wind velocity hit the resonant frequency of the structure. The visual score ‘Ever Falling Down’ is based on the technical plan drawing of the Tacoma Narrows bridge, imagining a musical interpretation of the dyanmics and tension in this moment.

Rumours of Angels (Millennium Bridge, London)

Instrumentation for Wind, Strings, Percussion, Voices and Electronics

The Millennium Bridge was originally prone to Synchronous Lateral Excitation, as the footsteps of those walking across created a wild swaying motion, until extra damping was applied to the cables. For this reason armies will always break step when crossing bridges, however the general public are not so well trained. This movement is imagined as part of the visual score, in addition to the voices of the angelic force that mythically descended on battelfields to help soldiers vanquish their enemies… The voice of the bridge takes angelic form, giving messages from another world.

POPSONICS RADIO

LISTEN: 24 Hours Artist Life in 5 Minutes – Jodi Rose
